Benefits of Music Education in our life

In our school, we go to music class every Tuesday. But do you know why we have music class in our school every week? Well, I´ll tell you why. I will start by sharing a short story about me. When I was 4 years old in JK, I could not speak properly and I only said words, not in full sentences. So I had a lot of challenges in class. When I was about 5 years old in SK, I began playing and listening music and my vocabulary improved dramatically. Music helped me a lot in language and especially in social times with my friends and family.

Recent studies shows that musical training physically develops the part of the brain which involved with processing the language and speech. It even helped me in not only just one subject, it helped me focus on lots of other things like math, social studies, science, language and the arts. Reading music includes learning about quarter notes, half notes, dotted quarter notes and stuff which are essentially fractions in math.

That is why in school, during our childhood, we have a subject called music. I go to piano lessons and I play the recorder and drums. Playing music is even a brain exercise and I’ll tell you why.

The first reason is that when your brain exercises, your brain can refocus and it will reset again and it’s like your brain is exercising in its own gym just like you do in a fitness center. The second reason is that it will refresh your mind once you play or listen to music several times because everything can’t go just like magic. That’s why after a long day at school, I play piano at home to refresh my brain.

The third reason is that sometimes you try to think lots of things at once. It isn’t like that. It’s like driving a car and when you drive, there are some signs which say “Don’t drink and drive”or “ Don’t text and drive”. That means you have to focus on something one by one because we don’t have two brains. We only have one brain. Of course we have the left and right hand sides of our brain but they only work together to focus on one thing.

Music also helps build creativity because when you compose a piece of music, you’re creating something and musicians are also artists. What I mean by that, is when musicians play music, they mostly get better in the arts. Being creative is important in everyday life and why is creativity important in everyday life? Well, it makes life more interesting and fulfilling.

Music helps build self-esteem which means music allows students to try something new and develop confidence as they master singing or playing an instrument. Usually kids get scared or shy to perform in front of the audience. But look at me, I go to several music festivals and perform in front of hundreds of people. I never get scared. I feel music gave me that self-esteem.

So that is why a musician's brain works differently than a non-musician´s brain. Music also helps to improve on listening skills because music involves listening to yourself and that’s why musicians have better hearing.

I hope you will all agree with me about the benefits of music education and that improves our lifestyle. Raise your hand if you’re up for music class.
